Teacher's Desk The stove provided heat for school and allowed teacher to heat food for students at lunch time. Students often brought vegetables, etc., from their family farms which the teacher would incorporate into a stew.

Hodge Exterior The school in its current location. It was originaly located in the nearby town of Washington, ME between the years of 1864 to 1954. The school was donated to the Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage, moved and dedicated in 1978.

Pictures of some of the teachers who tought in the school. The majority were older females widows, since married women were not allowed to teach.

The rear wall (north) contained a bookcase, several maps, pictures, etc., as well as a water container for the students. It also featured the doors to the outhouses (not present).

Rules This 1872 list of rules for teachers bears further scrutiny. The rules are:
1. Teachers each day will fill lamps, clean chimney
2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session
3. Make your pens carefully. You may wittle nibs to the individual taste of the pupils
4. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if thet go to church regularly
5. After 10 hours in school, the teachers may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books
6. Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed
7. Every teacher should lay aside from each day pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society
8. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty
9. The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.
