President's Message

Dear friends of the Matthews Museum,

Summer is upon us once again, although so far the weather has not been really cooperative. There is much to say and tell and ask about the museum, as we are always working to make things better in our continuing efforts to improve the great collection we have, to maintain the buildings it is housed in and of course to raise funds for the new building to house the 32 foot tall Moxie Bottle Stand.

On May 8th, board members and various other volunteers came together at the museum to do what is now officially the annual spring cleaning. Last year we received many compliments from museum guests about how good everything looked, which was well worth the effort.

We have seen some very welcome additions to the board over the past year. Bruce White joined last September and has been very active and helpful in every way he can. In March he attended a philanthropy conference on behalf of the museum, and on Memorial Day weekend he was painting the Hodge School. Fred Gildred was elected treasurer in the beginning of the year and brings both financial expertise and computer experience to the board. Many thanks to Gay Bogard for doing the job the year before. Judy Grinnell is still filling the secretary position very capably, but she is doing this on an interim basis. She resigned the position last fall, and since then we have been looking for a new secretary, to no avail. If anyone out there is interested in filling this important position, please step up to the plate and call me at 785-6482.

I am very glad to say that this summer our cataloguing project will continue. Last summer Sarah McDermott did a stellar job documenting our collection, and this year, from the last week of July until the beginning of September Hillary Matlin from Bowdoin college will take on the job.

This summer the museum will again take part in the activities around Founder's Day and have a presence at the Union Fair. We will need many volunteers, especially during the fair, be it for the booth or in the museum, so when you have a chance and can spare a day or so, sign yourself up.

This leaves me to give a special word of thanks to George Gross, thanks to whom you will be getting this newsletter. George spends a considerable amount of time putting things together and chasing people like me to produce their contributions to the newsletter in a timely manner.

I hope to see you all this summer, and look forward to working with you on the continued progress and success for the Matthews Museum and the Moxie Bottle Stand project.

Spring Housecleaning a Success

On Saturday, May 8, a crew of Museum members spent over two hours cleaning the interior of the Museum getting it ready for the active summer season. Many exhibits were dusted, all glass showcases were cleaned and the entire floor of the main building and carriage house were vacuumed. In addition, the walls of the two restrooms were given a coat of polyurethane finish.

Those working included Mike Hittmeier, Ben van der Schaaf, Judy Grinnell, Irene Hawes, Judy Gross, Archie Mitchell, Bruce White, Fred Gildred, Nathaniel Rolfes, Diane Purkey and George Gross. Much needs to be done in order to call the job complete including dusting of individual items and exhibits. Our curators, Archie Mitchell and Irene Hawes have spent many hours on their own opening up exhibits and setting up for the coming season.

The season will get underway, early, this year, with a major Boy Scout activity involving visits to the Museum and participation in Museum 'scavenger hunts during May.

Yankee Magazine Changes Account Number

Many members and non-members help to support the Museum by subscribing to Yankee Magazine through the Community Partners program. The Museum has received over $500 from these Yankee Magazine subscriptions.

We were informed recently that Yankee has changed the group number used to renew and on new subscriptions. The NEW number is Q8304U . There are also new cards that should be used. One of the new cards is enclosed. Please destroy all of the older cards that may be either blue or black ink. Use only the cards that are printed in green. Also, please write this number down and keep it handy as it should be placed on all renewal forms so we continue to receive our $8.00 contribution per subscription.

Volunteers Needed

As with all volunteer organizations ours runs only with the support of volunteers. Matthews Museum uses volunteers to greet and serve visitors to the Museum, work on maintenance projects, guide tours through the Museum, clean up and maintain displays and work on mailings, etc.

If you would like to volunteer in any of these areas please contact us by phone, mail or in person. You can email us at our web site, obtain phone numbers there, drop by the Museum any day, Tuesday through Sunday from 12-4PM or write to us at P.O. Box 582, Union, Maine 04862. WE NEED YOU!

Brochures Available to Place in Businesses

Museum brochures are available for placement at surrounding businesses who consent to their placement and distribution. If your place of employment has a waiting room or customer service counter ask if you may put some out for distribution during July and August. If you are friendly with a local business or a regular customer, ask them if you might place some there, also. The Museum's annual success relies on the number of visitors who attend and tour the exhibits.

You may pick up brochures from the Museum, when open, or request some by email at our web site or call 207-563-1544. We will arrange for you to have them for distribution. This is another way you can serve as a volunteer to help our Museum to grow.
