Museum Purchases Rare Thompson Document
The Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage in Union acquired an original Civil War document about Moxie creator Dr. Augustin Thompson, one of Union's most famous sons. The document, which lists his complete record of service in the 28th Maine, was created using a master illustration availble to members of the Grand Army of the Republic, the major veteran's organization in the North after the Civil War. Thompson was born in Union November 25, 1835, and later created Moxie, the famous soft drink that was as popular as Coca Cola at the beginning of the 20th century. The Matthews Museum, based on the Union Fairgrounds, had voted to spend up to $800 of museum funds on the acquisition; however, several other interested parties pushed the price up tp $2,000, making additional fund raising necessary. Several museum members have pledged to contribute towards the gap, but more contributions are needed.
